Where in the world is Church Dogmatics?

800px-Wikipedia-karlbarth01So there I was. In the middle of the Biola library. I had the dewey decimal number memorized and I descended down the cool corridor to the lower level. The strangely quieter basement floor lit by bright florescent lights, with scattered students working on their particular projects. Found the shelf number, turned the bend, and there they were. All 13 volumes of it’s systematic splendor: Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics. Ran my fingers across the 40 year old spines, I grabbed the one I needed. Walked all the way upstairs, then– yep, realized I grabbed the wrong one.

So what’s worse is I realized they were out of the one I needed. Searched, and asked, and couldn’t find a single copy. Neither at the local Christian bookstore. Blerg.

So what now? Well, like anyone born in the 80’s would have done, I got on my laptop and tried to find a copy online. They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch? Well, I don’t eat books, and you can get books on the Internets for free. Mostly. Here’s my findings:

1. Google Books. Google books is great. Wonderful. But when it comes to Barth, there were two bummers:
One. The books were incomplete. I don’t know if there were copyright issues, or they wanted you to buy the book, but you couldn’t get it all on there. In fact, a pivotal part I was in need of was missing. Blerg.
And two, they were difficult to figure out how to get to the actual volume you needed. The layout was funky. So I took the liberty of just throwing them all down here:

The Doctrine of the World of God.
Vol. I/1Vol. I/2

The Doctrine of God.
Vol. II/1Vol. II/2

The Doctrine of Creation.
Vol. III/1Vol. III/2Vol. III/3Vol. III/4

The Doctrine of Reconciliation.
Vol. IV/1Vol. IV/2Vol. IV/3.2Vol. IV/3.1Index.

2. Alexander Street Press. Maybe the publisher? Anyways, they claim to have the whole library online. However, like everything, there’s a catch. You have to pay. But, I guess you can get a free 30-day pass here, so if you just need it once, or are just testing it out, this would probably be a good option.

3. Christian Book Distributers. Not the best price, but one of my favorite sites to get books. They tend to be competitive, but they claim to be able to get the book to you the next day if you order by noon.

4. BigWords.com Best price, plus if you’re buying lots of books, they can find multiple books, at best price on multiple websites, with options (like Amazon Prime memberships, Barnes and Noble rewards memberships) that may apply to you to find the best prices.

It’s all I got. Any better suggestions, I could use them. I still need a copy of Vol. II/1 soon. Like, soon. (Like, now.)

The paperbacks from Continuum / T&T Clark ought to be in print and available. They look like crap, but all the words are there. ;-)
